Inhouse Studio

2 min read Reviewed August 2026 Glossary Entry

Short definition

An inhouse studio is a permanently equipped production space on a company's own premises, used to produce video and streaming formats without external rental. Typical scope: 20 to 70 square meters, acoustically damped, with fixed camera, lighting, and audio technology, and an operating logic that works even without technical staff.

Structural Prerequisites

Not every available room is suitable. Three factors determine the achievable quality, and they can only be corrected later with considerable effort:

  • Ceiling height — below about 2.80 meters, lighting becomes difficult because fixtures sit too low and create harsh shadows. From 3.20 meters onward, there is considerably more creative freedom.
  • Room acoustics — reverberation time is the most commonly underestimated factor. Glass surfaces, concrete, and parquet create a reverb that no choice of microphone can compensate for later.
  • Ambient noise — ventilation, elevator shafts, adjacent traffic areas. Air conditioning that cannot be switched off during recording permanently limits audio quality.

Typical Equipment Tiers

Compact

CEO video messages, single interviews

  • 1–2 fixed cameras
  • Basic lighting
  • Lavalier microphones
  • Full HD streaming

Professional

Townhalls, hosted formats with guests

  • Multi-cam with vision mixing
  • Lighting scenes
  • Graphics overlay
  • Redundancy

Broadcast

business-critical formats, shareholder meetings

  • Broadcast lenses
  • Full redundancy
  • LED walls
  • Intercom

What Is Often Forgotten

Three items missing from almost every initial plan

  • Storage space for equipment and set elements
  • Preparation area for presenters — makeup, storage, quiet before the take
  • Network connectivity with sufficient, guaranteed upload bandwidth — the most common technical bottleneck in livestreaming, more so than camera technology

Studio vs. External Rental

An inhouse studio does not replace every external production. Both approaches have a clear area in which they make sense:

Own Studio

  • available at any time, no rental needed
  • repeatable workflows and consistent quality
  • confidentiality on your own premises

Typical for sensitive internal topics and recurring formats.

vs.

External Rental

  • space and technology for an on-site audience
  • elaborate set builds without your own investment

Typical for one-off large-scale formats.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum floor space needed for an inhouse studio?

For a single presenter position with clean background distance, around 20 to 35 square meters is practical. For hosted formats with a guest and camera movement, 35 to 70 square meters should be planned.

Can a meeting room be converted into a studio?

Often yes, provided ceiling height and ambient noise are suitable. The critical factors are usually acoustics and ventilation that cannot be temporarily switched off.
